Baseline monitoring is not necessarily something that you do just when you consider an upgrade but it’s a great practice on an everyday basis. It can help with:

You will need to monitor the following:

All this will help you create a plan and be prepared in case something goes wrong. Identifying issues before they become problems is also a great practice to help keep your servers healthy.

Luckily, there are some tools that help you get the job done:

After you are done with the monitoring, the next step would be making sure that you evaluate your environment.

If you have Domino 9.0.1 and 10.x things are rather straightforward. Domino 9.0.1 environments can skip version 10 and upgrade right to 11.0.1.

With versions prior to Domino 9 you will need to:

When it comes to evaluating the existing environment you’ll need to start with the Operating System and Hardware Requirements:

Some things that need to be taken into consideration when moving from 32-bit to 64-bit:

You have two versions of HCL Domino V11: 11.0 and 11.0.1. There are some features available across versions:

Next in line comes clustering. You might know that it’s a good idea to keep the HCL Domino V11 servers in a separate cluster.

You can have a mixed version 10/11 environment while performing the upgrade because cluster replication does not restrict the replication of design elements. Also, Domino 11 Directory (pubnames.ntf) is backward compatible with Notes/Domino 10, while Other databases may cause problems on earlier Domino servers and clients.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”] If you have a Traveler environment you will need to upgrade Domino first. You can run Traveler on any version of Domino that Traveler supports. The latest maintenance level of the Domino server version is recommended as a best practice. If you upgrade Domino to a major version, you must re-run the Traveler installation to ensure correct binaries are in place.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text quote_border_weight=”14px” quote_border_color=”#811937″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ link_font=”||||||||” quote_font=”|700|||||||” quote_text_color=”#000000″ quote_font_size=”18px” quote_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”|700|||||||” header_2_font_size=”25px” header_2_line_height=”1.5em” max_width=”700px” max_width_tablet=”” max_width_phone=”” max_width_last_edited=”on|tablet” header_2_font_size_tablet=”30px” header_2_font_size_phone=”15px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|desktop” locked=”off” header_font_size__hover=”30px” header_font_size__hover_enabled=”30px” header_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” header_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” header_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” header_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” header_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_2_font_size__hover=”26px” header_2_font_size__hover_enabled=”26px” header_2_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” header_2_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” header_2_line_height__hover=”1em” header_2_line_height__hover_enabled=”1em” header_2_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” header_2_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” header_2_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_2_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_3_font_size__hover=”22px” header_3_font_size__hover_enabled=”22px” header_3_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” header_3_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” header_3_line_height__hover=”1em” header_3_line_height__hover_enabled=”1em” header_3_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” header_3_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” header_3_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_3_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_4_font_size__hover=”18px” header_4_font_size__hover_enabled=”18px” header_4_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” header_4_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” header_4_line_height__hover=”1em” header_4_line_height__hover_enabled=”1em” header_4_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” header_4_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” header_4_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_4_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_5_font_size__hover=”16px” header_5_font_size__hover_enabled=”16px” header_5_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” header_5_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” header_5_line_height__hover=”1em” header_5_line_height__hover_enabled=”1em” header_5_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” header_5_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” header_5_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_5_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_6_font_size__hover=”14px” header_6_font_size__hover_enabled=”14px” header_6_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” header_6_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” header_6_line_height__hover=”1em” header_6_line_height__hover_enabled=”1em” header_6_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” header_6_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” header_6_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” header_6_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” text_letter_spacing__hover=”0px” text_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”0px” text_text_shadow_style__hover=”none” text_text_shadow_style__hover_enabled=”none” text_text_shadow_color__hover=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)” text_text_shadow_color__hover_enabled=”rgba(0,0,0,0.4)”] Moving to the Deployment Sequence, here are the steps you need to take when upgrading a small to medium environment (10.000 users or less):
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://www.prominic.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Domino-upgrade-2.jpg” alt=”Domino-upgrade-2″ title_text=”Domino-upgrade-2″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”] When it comes to Enterprise environments the deployment should look like this:
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://www.prominic.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Domino-upgrade-3.jpg” alt=”Domino-upgrade-3″ title_text=”Domino-upgrade-3″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”] The next step will be determining the best path:

The easiest approach for upgrading is the in-place upgrade.
